Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is a non-invasive form of medical care used to treat muscle and joint problems including (but not limited to): headaches, neck pain, back pain and pain in the joints of the arms or legs. The purpose of the adjustment is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a gentle, controlled force to joints that have lost their normal movement as a result of mechanical stress and/or injury.

These treatments improve joint function, help to relieve acute pain symptoms, reduce muscle tightness, and eliminate soft tissue adhesions. Joint and soft-tissue injuries can be caused by a single traumatic event or injury or through repetitive stresses such as sitting with poor spinal posture for an extended time. If these injuries and joint restrictions are not treated, the tissue that connects to these joint structures becomes taut, creating adhesions known as trigger points. In addition, because the joint itself is restricted in its range of motion, the fluid that hydrates the region is not able to properly lubricate the structure, which allows arthritis to set in overtime and increases pain to the area.

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

Non-surgical spinal decompression therapy is a motorized traction therapy that gently stretches the spine in an attempt to create a negative intradiscal pressure to promote retraction or repositioning of the herniated or bulging disc material. This results in a change of force and position of the spine which takes the pressure off of the spinal discs or nerves. Spinal decompression relieves the pain and disability resulting from disc injury and degeneration by repairing damaged discs and reversing dystrophic changes in nerves. Spinal decompression addresses the functional and mechanical aspects of discogenic pain and disease through non-surgical decompression of intervertebral discs.

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression is an effective treatment for the following condition(s):

Manual and Instrument Assisted Adhesion

Adhesion is the most common musculoskeletal condition in the body. Manual adhesion release (MAR) and instrument assisted adhesion release (IARM) are advanced treatments Dr. Shores uses to break down adhesions and nerve entrapments. The primary difference between MAR and IARM is using only the hands to break down adhesions vs using an instrument to assist.

Massage Therapy

Chiropractic care and massage therapy both relieve pain and restore mobility. Together, they extend the health and wellness benefits of each type of treatment. Chiropractic targets the musculoskeletal structure, nervous system and hard tissues like the spine, bones, and joints. Massage therapy focuses on the soft tissues, so the two treatments compliment each other for the benefit of the patient.

Nutritional Counseling

Dr. Shores specializes in nutritional counseling to help patients meet their goals. Nutrition is an important key component to achieving optimal health and recovery from injury. A lifestyle focused on eating anti-inflammatory foods can be life changing.

Myofunctional Therapy

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is neurological re-education focusing on the mouth (oro), face (facial) and regions of the neck (oropharyngeal area). Orofacial myofunctional disorders include alterations in breathing patterns, chewing, swallowing, speech, and oral rest posture. The four main goals of myofunctional therapy are to establish and maintain:

1. A competent lip seal
2. Consistent nasal breathing
3. Correct tongue posture
4. A correct swallow pattern

Myofunctional therapy has been shown to have a positive impact on eating, speaking, breathing, sleep (including mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea), cosmetic and dental concerns, headaches, reduction of forward head posture, etc. Myofunctional therapy works in concert with chiropractic care to provide lifelong benefits for both children and adults. Many dentists that specialize in releasing tongue and lip ties require myofunctional therapy both before and after release to increase success of the revision and retrain the muscles of the orofacial region that have been compensating for a restricted tongue.

Traumatic Brain Injury Assessment and Treatment

If you have been diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), otherwise known as a concussion, it can be very frustrating to feel like nothing is being done to relieve symptoms like headaches, dizziness, nausea, insomnia, irritability, or the numerous other problems this condition can cause. It is important to remember that the symptoms of most brain injuries can be improved with specific rehabilitation, just like injuries to muscles or joints. Your brain is capable of healing, and even if you’re not able to regain 100% of the function you had before your injury, significant progress is possible with most patients we see in our clinic.

Auto Accident Assessment and Treatment

Dr. Shores has spent his career focusing on injuries sustained in motor vehicle collisions. The initial visit will consist of a comprehensive exam to determine the full extent of your injuries. In many cases, additional diagnostic testing is required, such as an MRI. At Shores Chiropractic, patients have many different options for treatment and therapy to treat and rehabilitate injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Dry Needling

Dr. Sterban is certified in dry needling. Dry needling is a form of therapy in which fine needles are inserted into myofascial trigger points (painful knots in muscles), tendons, ligaments, or near nerves in order to stimulate a healing response in painful musculoskeletal conditions. Dry needling is not acupuncture or Oriental Medicine; that is, it does not have the purpose of altering the flow of energy (“Qi”) along traditional Chinese meridians for the treatment of diseases. In fact, dry needling is a modern, science-based intervention for the treatment of pain and dysfunction in musculoskeletal conditions such as neck pain, shoulder impingement, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, knee pain, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, or low-back pain.
